CMM Community Outreach Project

This project encompasses the dreams and visions of countless individuals. Many dream of the elementary school being used once again as a school. Our internship program will make these dreams come alive. Qualified individuals will teach others in areas of Agricultural, Horticultural, Culinary, Animal husbandry, Music and mission fields. There are some who envision these buildings being used as a place of rest and revitalization. We will offer one and two day retreats as well as extended camping opportunities. Some dream of a youth outreach so powerful that youth from all over are reached with the message of hope. The inside skate board park, art studio, stage, basketball court, and athletic field will focus on providing our youth with positive growth opportunities. Our goal for the entire project is to bring about peace and restoration for each individual who enters and for the surrounding communities. Below is some of what we hope to do.

AUDITORIUM  (Old high school)
The auditorium will be restored to be used as the following:

  1. community shelter for tornadoes
  2. all purpose community activity building
  3. youth outreach offices
  4. prom closet (second) we will not close the Emporia location; The prom closet is a place for young people to obtain free of charge new or nearly new prom clothes, fancy dress attire or nice work clothes. We have a prom closet location already located in Emporia
  5. indoors skate park

As you can see many trees which were growing too closely to the building have been cut and treated so the roots will die. In fall we will remove the stumps. Much of this property had been over grown with trees. Trees have been cut and removed to a safe area where is will be cut to size for winter heat. CMM donated the 100 plus cords of firewood to the Shiloh house, in Emporia Kansas, a home for unwed mothers, they will use the wood for heating their facility.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
The elementary school will be used as the following:

1.recording studio
2.radio station
3.life guidance offices
4.conference center
5.internship program:     Agriculture, Horticultural, Music, Culinary, Animal husbandry,
                                     Missionary service
6.Missionary service
7.meeting place for 10 step support groups
8.general offices for CMM  Directors
9.retreat center

HISTORICAL INFORMATION
The first school at Elmdale was held spring of 1862. The first regular district school that was organized in Chase County was held in District No. 1, which is the Elmdale District.  This district was organized in the spring of 1862.  The first school board was composed of George Blackburn Houston (my father), as chairman; Robert Brash, as clerk; and Enos Williams as treasurer.  They built a log school house [and] located it on the side of the hill, which I think is on the Tom Pyle place, close to where this school house was built afterward and south west of where Mr. Pyle now lives.  Clabboard roof and puchen floors, the floor being split out of hackberry logs from 18 inches to two feet wide, about three inchs thick and hewn as smooth as possible with a broad ax.  Some boards were thicker than others, consequently the floor was not very smooth.  A seat was placed along the south side of the wall which was held in place by legs which were driven into holes that were bored into the wall.  This one seat held all the children and on the north side of the room another slab was fixed like the other, only placed higher on the wall which was used for a writing desk.  The teacher had a bench made of the same material but she had no desk.  Miss Katie Fern, a little Irish girl, who lived near Bazaar and who afterwards became Mrs. Gleason, was the teacher.  She was hired to teach a three-months school and was paid $10.00 per month.  She boarded around among her pupils, spending one night with one family and the next with another and then repeating the circuit. The Elementary school was built in 1895 by Sharp Brothers for the grand sum of $5,000 dollars. The native lime stone walls are approximately 3 feet thick and in mint condition. The school measures out to be approximately 3800 square feet.

Elmdale was founded in 1871 by the Arkansas Valley Townsite Co.  A. Seaton was the president of this company.  Elmdale contained a hotel, drug store, hardware store, three general stores, two blacksmith shops, a saw-grist mill, a depot, a church and school house.  The first store was owned by William Jeffrey, and [started] in 1872 with fifty dollars worth of goods.  This store was started near where the depot stands.  Joshua Shipman built the dam and grist mill on the Cottonwood River in 1870.  Some of the other Elmdale early settlers were a. M. Berry, P. C. Jeffrey, Josiah Rider, Stephen A. Wood, and Robert Brash.

The town of Elmdale, was given its name at the time [the 1870s] the Santa Fe built its railroad through this county, according to Joe Jeffrey, pioneer resident of the town.  The name “Elmdale’ was given by a Santa Fe official because in building the road it was necessary to cut down a giant Elm tree which stood directly in the right of way.  The tree was so beautiful that the railroad official was loath to destroy it but decided to do the next best thing in commemoration of the tree by naming the town after it.  Mr. Jeffrey came to the town in 1869 at which time there were but two roads joining at Elmdale.
